The 8th of the 8th, 2008 at 8pm. It's no coincidence. In Feng Shui, Chinese astrology and numerology, 8 is thought to be a very lucky number. But respected Feng Shui master, Raymond Lo, thinks 2008 won't be a good year for China. And the country has already experienced riots in Tibet, chaos over the Olympic torch relay, a train crash and then of course the recent devastating earthquake.
In Chinese astrology, 2008 is The Year of the Rat and, according to Lo, this is part of the problem. Lo thinks the misfortune will happen because president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao were both were born in 1942, The Year of the Horse. He told the International Herald Tribune, "In animal astrology we know the horse clashes with the rat. This is a very common thing, well known among Chinese people. So if you are born in the Year of the Horse, because of the clash against the Rat you will have a turbulent year." About picking 8/8/08 for the Olympics to start he said, "This is a good day, a day of achievement. There is nothing bad about the day. It just happens to be a turbulent year for China. The calendar doesn't saying anything about the Olympics, but the calendar tells that this year is a year of earth and water disasters. That means natural disasters are very common this year."
The date for the Olympics has also caused great excitement among Chinese women wanting to have a baby. According to the Shanghai Evening News, many Chinese women are determined to have an olympic baby by taking medical risks. Some are opting for caesareans earlier than they should. Others chose to be artificially inseminated to have an 8/8/08 birth.
